This was/is one of my silent resolutions of 2010.

Amidst all the hype with the new venture dead centre in Kathmandu, I had my mind set on boycotting the eatery!

Why?

This resolution gained ground, primarily because I did not want to pay a shit load for Brazilian chicken KFC supposedly uses because the Nepalese chicken or Indian ones are subpar the KFC standard. The resolve was also partly strengthened by my tree hugging nature (chicken all the way from Brazil will have quite a carbon footprint). I guess Prawin‘s note on Boycott KFC and Hero Jig’s article in Republica were equally persuasive.

However, I did end up at the joint a few weeks ago just out of a politeness.

How?
My cousin, who was entertaining out-of-valley friends, shelled out an invite to me. I did not want to make a complete oaf of myself, by making public my stance against the bootilicious Brazilian chicken. And so, I meekly complied.

Once inside the vibrant ambiance, feeling surprisingly out-of-place, my attention was drawn to a billboard of a pea shooting a chicken with a peashooter; it read, “because chicken and mutter don’t mix, we use separate oil for vegetable meals” (or something similar).

The advert did grow on me but waiting in line, making an order and having to take your own food to the table and still be billed for service tax and VAT did not.  A bill for Rs. 1100 for just a large bucket wasn’t very appealing either. 🙁

The chicken was surprisingly succulent and I could vaguely relate the taste to the KFC meals I have had exactly twice before.

In the end, I didn’t pay for it so ends out I didn’t really falter on my resolution. Now my resolve stands stronger and I am not paying for the expensive Brazilian chicken ever. (Unless of course if I end up in Rio)

Disclosure: I have eaten @ KFC outlets exactly thrice in my lifetime.
Once on a trip to the floating market in Damnaem Sadaoek because there
was nothing remotely recognisable to edible in the bus station, and
once in Bangalore to taste something global. :)
I can't really credit Peta's Kentucky fried Cruelty campaign for my
resolve because I have seen and bought chicken from establishments
similar to what Peta touts KFC to be.
